PROJECT PORTFOLIO

Climate Change

Science for a more resilient and sustainable agriculture

The climate change portfolio aims to offer technical-scientific alternatives for the adaptation and sustainability of Brazilian agriculture in light of the challenges imposed by climate change, contributing to food security and for the control of national greenhouse gas emissions.

Adaptation and control of emissions from agriculture

Agriculture is one of the production sectors that has been more strongly affected by climate change stemming from global warming.  Its performance is quite influenced by climate conditions and by the occurrence of extreme events, such as long periods of drought, heat and cold waves, and alterations in the rainfall regime, which have already had their impact noticed by the farmers. Science has shown that is possible to adopt actions that protect agriculture, making it more resilient and providing greater security for farmers to remain in the activity, while offering the co-benefit of controlling emissions by the sector, helping the country to accomplish internationally accepted environmental and mitigation commitments and also maintain the national and global food security.

The projects organized by Embrapa's portfolio aim to find solutions in partnership with the production sector and to guide public policies.  Its main challenges are focused on elevating production systems’ capacity to adapt to climate change, improving the models for future scenario projections, advancing in carbon balance assessments, and upgrading the protocols that foment  value aggregation and the establishment of compensation mechanism for farmers.

Innovation challenges:

  • Adding value to the products generated in integrated systems (AFS, ICL, and ICLF ones) and to other systems that promote the adaptive capacity of the most vulnerable chains and the control of GHG emissions in the grain, cattle farming, bovine, and agroenergy chains.
  • Increasing the adaptive capacity and resilience of agricultural production systems with a higher projected economic impact and relevance for food security based on climate change scenarios
  • Structuring the digital and integrated intelligence platform for climate risk management and resilience in Brazilian agriculture (CICLAg).
  • Structuring the digital and integrated intelligence platform for climate risk management and resilience in Brazilian agriculture.
  • Structuring a digital platform to characterize the level of sustainability in agricultural, livestock, and forestry systems and the effects produced by recommended adjustments in the management of such production systems.
  • Projecting scenarios of national GHG emissions from agricultural activities based on emission factors and models that are specific to the Brazilian reality (IPCC tiers 2 and 3)..
  • Projecting climate risk scenarios of the main agricultural production systems arising from water and thermal stresses, and changes in the dynamics of phytosanitary problems that are intensified by climate change.
  • Reducing or controlling GHG emissions from extensive beef cattle farming and the use of nitrogen fertilizers and fossil fuels in Brazilian agricultural systems.
